Having a car in Europe is great for getting in between cities, but inside cities it is a hassle. Frankfurt has declared their city an Environmental Zone, so you have to have a special permit to be able to enter by car. We ended up just parking at our hotel, which was on the outskirts of town by the airport, and taking a tram to the museum. They didn’t have any parking, anyways. It was an immersive experience of how the region fared during WWII. The Alsace-Moselle region has changed hands several times since the War of 1870. Sometimes it was France, sometimes it was Germany. During WWII, the Nazis annexed the region, and there was an actual concentration camp (Natzweiler-Struthof, indicated with the arrow in my photo here) just across the valley from this memorial. I wish we had known about it earlier, because I would have made sure we had time to visit. I particularly liked these breasts, because I look at breasts a lot in my line of work, and these looked back at me. From the card next to the art: Mirror Breasts, Maria Roosen (1957), glass and mirrored glass with nylon thread, 1993-1999. Breasts are ubiquitous in art and can be viewed unabashedly. However, these glass breasts look back at the viewer, reflecting the surroundings. They are firm and round, yet fragile and hard. Restaurant service in Europe is a lot different from the United States. We couldn’t get a table at the museum cafe, and the only option was to just stand and wait for a table to be free and then to pounce on it. (In the US there would be a carefully managed waiting list.) So we defaulted to our usual, which is to get some pre-packaged sandwiches and other lunchy things from Albert Heijn, which is a ubiquitous grocery store chain in the Netherlands. I don’t have a photo of the buildings at Whitney Plantation, but I wanted to share this one, which is a memorial to the enslaved men who participated in the1811 Slave Revolt. They were captured and executed and their heads were placed on poles as a deterrent to others.
